THE IMPACTS OF TECHNOLOGY

Jumat, 19 April 2013

Everyday we cannot live without technology. We wake up in the morning, we take a bath, we have breakfast, we do our daily activities, all are affected by something called technology. From the simplest form of it until the most complex one, technology filled our daily life. The famous phrase "Information Technology" of course is one of the forms of technology.
In short, technology is something related to science and engineering, which is used by the human or other creatures in dealing with their environment, to make their life easier.
The technology develops fast. From the ancient age to the the modern age, there are billions of its products that have made our life easier. In prehistoric age, the ancient human created the tools made of stone. They also invented the wheel, which is very important to the next centuries. Imagine that there weren’t any invention of wheel. We must give a lot of energy to move our goods from one place to another. Many centuries later, there are a lot of important inventions for human’s life, such as the invention of telephone. Using it, we may communicate through long distances. And the latest technology which has given many changes to the world and is still being developed is the information technology.
The development of technology gives some impacts to human beings and the other creatures. Well, let me start from the positive one. Technology indeed makes our life easier. Without the inventions of technology, I think we would live our lives just like the prehistoric men did.
However, technology, just like the other things in this world, also has negative impacts. I’ll give you three examples. First, technology takes out the filters, like social filter, cultural filter, and religious filter. We can see in Internet technology. Internet is a medium in which no filter and censorship. Without parental guidance, your children may consume inappropriate materials from the Internet.
The second one is the decrease of your social skills. Too much usage of technology makes you more antisocial. In the past, children used to play traditional games with their friends outside the house. But now they prefer playing video games in their own room, all by themselves.
The easy access of technology also makes you too dependent on it. In the past, our people had more memorizing skills. They had to memorize things, because there were no tool to use to record things, except notebooks (the original phrase of notebook, not the portable computer). But nowadays, by using the computer, you can save any information you want in its memory to retrieve it in another day. In advance, by using the Internet connection, you may search any information you need through any search engine like Google, Yahoo, Altavista instantly.
Dealing with those negative impacts, what can we do? First, we must be aware of them. We must be aware that technology could also cause bad things. After that, we must give the people knowledge of those negative impacts and how to deal with them. The government also have to do some actions about this. They must give some regulations relating with the press and the media. It is just need to be done to protect our society, not to restrain the press. And then, to increase the social skills, we must create the real community, build the real network, makes friends in the real world, of course not in the cyber world. By doing that, it will take us back to our nature, as social creatures.

THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TELEVISION AND RADIO

Nowadays, television and radio have become important media of communication in many countries. Having a television and a radio at home is felt to be necessary in this globalization era for they provide us with information, education and various kinds of entertainment. One of the greatest advantages of television is that it provides information visually and enables one to remember things vividly whereas radio can spread the information more widely and thus enables one to know the news more quickly.

As the sources of education, television and radio are very beneficial to adults as well as children who cannot read yet. They can learn by looking at the pictures on the television and listening to the words spoken on TV and radio. Students can also learn their school subjects such as Mathematics, Science, English and others from these media.

As the sources of entertainment, television and radio have become very popular among us. Many kinds of films, both local and foreign ones and other interesting programs are shown and broadcast everyday. Not only that, we can also choose the programs we like best from many channels or stations available.

Although television and radio have the advantages as mentioned above, it cannot be denied that they also have some disadvantages, which I’m going to describe below.
Many people, especially students, become lazy to do their assignments or homework if there is a good film on TV or there is an interesting program on the radio. They usually postpone their work or their studies and say to themselves that they will do it after watching or listening, but later they ignore it at all.

TV and radio can have bad effects on the children and those who cannot read, too because not all of the programs shown or broadcast are suitable for them. They can take example of something they should not do easily by watching or listening to such programs.
TV and radio commercials can also sometimes persuade one to be consumptive instead of being thrifty.

Realizing these facts, we therefore, must be careful and selective in choosing only the right and useful programs to watch or listen. So let’s all accompany our younger brothers or sisters in front of TV or radio. Give them the right explanation about what is good and what is bad, what should be followed and what should be avoided from the programs so that they can get the most advantages out of these widely used media.

Should We Treat Teenage Idols As Role Models?

It is easy to be pessimistic in speaking about where teenagers take their inspiration from nowadays, but it is at least as easy to point out gaping holes in this line of argumentation. From teachers to parents to concerned columnists, the common complaint is that something new is being developed in terms of young people looking to celebrities for guidance on how to find their own way in life. Exposure of teenagers to this media obsession is so heavy and their malleability as consumers so large that constant stories about star singers, Hollywood actors and reality show participants have a lasting impact on their perspectives on just about any meaningful issue. In fact, as their argument seems to go, high-profile individuals that make it to the headlines on a regular basis, the likes of Britney Spears or Agnes Monica, have turned into actual role models for a growing section of the population. To make matters worse, in absence of solid authorities in family life or at schools, their impact on life choices and attitudes of the youth is being quickly solidified, practically unchallenged

Calling these assertions a load of rubbish may be too harsh, but there is no denying their foundations are weak and most conclusions miss the point rather wide. First, accepting the fact that celebrities as the only role models left would mean that we are OK with the collapse of the entire social structure that supplies good practice examples in every sphere of life. Inspiring individuals have not died out as a species, even if for some people the generation of today's septuagenarians and those older embodies values and virtues that are being wiped off the face of the earth as they slowly pass away. However, in difference ways, younger vintages of honorable, resilient and talented people set high standards in a number of spheres, from literature to science. Despite plenty of whinging, I do not recall one year when they declined to give out the Nobel Prize or hundreds of other high-powered accolades for people of considerable substance and stature due to lack of noteworthy material.

Another misguided belief plenty of critics seem to subscribe to is that youngsters are uncritical about celebrity gossip. In fact, there might be a much more complex relationship between their fascination with fame and fortune than many want to admit. For one thing, it may not be so strong as some arguments assert and teenagers just grow out of things as soon as they stop being appealing. Suddenly, one day, what they talk about via their webcam messaging system is no longer the latest episode of Dancing with the Stars or some other virtual reality problems, but issues of substance. I remember collecting newspaper clippings as a kid about action movie actors and my parents showed concern due to levels of violence in this sort of entertainment and dominant values they propagated, but this childish obsession went away as time passed. Expect the same as your children become larger than celebrities they look up to.

Home school or public school?

Public School or Home School, Which is Right for You? Our comparison of public school versus home school may help you decide the best option for your child. Keep reading to discover the pros and cons of public vs. home school.
If you are reading this article, then education choice is probably a high priority. So what are the pros and cons of a public school education versus a home school education? What is best for your situation?
Regardless of whether you go online or actively seek out public school and home school advocates in your area you will soon find that there is a heated debate over which type of education is better. There are two important factors to first consider before weighing the actual system of education:
  • First, analyze the child or children to be educated. Do they have special needs, either physically, intellectually, socially or emotionally?
  • Second, analyze your own situation. If homeschooling, can you provide the needed environment of learning? Can the public school system provide the needed environment of learning?
With these considerations in mind, we can now study the pros and cons of each educational system.
Public School

Public schools have varying degrees of educational prowess and resources. A good step is to check out local and state statistics concerning the level of education in your area schools. These can be found online or by contacting the district offices. Once you have a cursory knowledge of the school’s educational aims, you should consider the following pros and cons.
Pros of Public School:
  • Learning within a group setting
  • Extra-curricular activity availability
  • More curriculum opportunities
  • Diverse social education
Cons of Public School:
  • High student-teacher ratio
  • Less independence (scheduled learning)
  • School chooses curriculum
  • Peers based on area instead of choice
With a myriad of statistics online promoting both public school and home school, it is easy to get confused as to which is best. Another good resource is neighbors who have been in the area for a long time. Discuss your concerns over the educational opportunities in your area with people who have experienced it.

Home School

One startling statistic is that more and more people are choosing home school. In fact the number of homeschoolers is now in the millions. Consider the following pros and cons in making your choice.
Pros of Home School
  • Free to choose curriculum
  • Free to choose schedule
  • Small teacher to student ratio
  • Teaches students to be independent in their learning choices
Cons of Home School
  • Usually more expensive than public school
  • Teachers are not always qualified to teach all subjects
  • It’s harder to provide social interaction
  • Colleges sometimes have stricter admission policies concerning homeschooled students.
A con or a pro, depending on how you look at it is that children and parents are in the same vicinity for days at a time. Some parents cherish that time with their children and some parents are driven crazy if their kids are not out of the house. Again, going back to the first considerations, you must analyze yours and your children’s needs.
Regardless of your choice, the important thing is to understand what is available and the consequences of both systems. Through research and reading articles such as this, you are, in effect, becoming educated about education.

Facebook and Social Networking

The digital media topic I decided to look into is the popular social networking site, Facebook.

The first article I chose was written by an author for the Network Journal of Communications. In this article, author Brent Leary, compares and contrasts popular social networking sites and his recent experiences with them. He talks about being a member of over twelve different social networking sites in which he has spent time using each network. My main interest in this article was the author’s insight into his most recent addition to his list, Facebook. At the time the article was written in November of 2007, Leary credits Linkedin as the most popular business networking site on the web, but after joining Facebook, the he began to see far more Facebook network invites than he once saw on Linkedin. Once well acquainted with Facebook, he stated “What’s appealing about Facebook I the way it fosters more knowledge sharing and collaboration with those in your network. I have learned more about the people in my Facebook network in a few weeks than I have in several months of Linkedin”. The article also touches on the more recent features of Facebook applications that allow for even further interaction in many different areas of interest. He also notes that business application providers such as Yahoo! Finance, Zoho, etc. are building widgets to work with Facebook in order for Facebook to infiltrate further into the business networking field. I agree with this article that one of the most appealing characteristic of Facebook is that they have been able to grow from what was once only a college based network, to a worldwide network with many different areas of interest. Most importantly they have been able to do this while staying very user friendly, professional, and private, unlike other social networks such as Myspace. This has allowed Facebook to become as financially valuable to it’s creators as it is socially valuable for it’s members.
I chose this second article because after reading the first article, I found it very interesting to see how Facebook has not only established itself in the networking world, but in financial market as well. My second source is an article that was written back in October 2007, titled “Microsoft Buys Stake In Facebook”. As indicated by the headline, this story was written about Microsoft winning the battle against Yahoo and Google, in which they surfaced as the first major investor in Facebook. This story was very important because it allowed the world to put a price on the value of Facebook as a company. Microsoft paid $240 million for a 1.6% stake in Facebook which led to the total estimated value at $15 billion at the time. The article also includes a brief overview of how the company began and what types of perks Microsoft will look to receive from its investments. One of the very interesting quotes in the article, which I feel is very relative to the new digital media age we are in, was quoted by a venture capitalist who invested in companies that make applications for Facebook. She stated, “Once a social operating system takes over a country, it’s like it becomes the native language of that country”. I myself am fairly new to the social networking scene, yet I find this statement to be very true within my generation. I have witnessed both the growth of Facebook and Myspace alter the way in which we communicate. The basis for the idea behind social networks is the digital connection we are able to make with others which is not limited by space, time, or distance. Both Facebook and Myspace have been able to successfully capitalize on this by allowing users freedom to network within all different interest groups, which I believe has allowed them to grow into billion dollar companies at light speed.
My first article written in the Network Journal, although scholarly, is written as a more opinionated piece. As someone who is not well rehearsed with other social networks other than Facebook and Myspace, this article gave me insight into why Facebook’s popularity and membership is where it is at in the social networking industry. This article was written in an analytical style that did an excellent job at contrasting the many different social networks, while explaining the concept/purpose of social networking at the same time. The next source I found via The New York Times, was a great follow-up read that presented a news story containing more factual writing than opinion. I have always wondered why certain social networking sites take off as Facebook and Myspace did. The way these articles complimented each other gave me a much better understanding not only into how they grow in terms of investment, but more importantly what the members of these sites value in terms of use and applications.

Effects Of Online Games On Teenagers

Development in technology brings many things that people don't have many years back. One of these things is online gaming that is provided by the internet.
Online gaming is one of the widely used leisure activities by many people. Teenagers who are playing these online games said that they are playing these games just for fun, to keep away from the heat of the sun, without knowing that there are a lot of effects of playing these games that are more than what they think.Playing online games, according to some research is beneficial. It enables the mind of the players to be more active, especially those puzzle-based games. It helps the player to come up with decisions in tight situations, especially those adventure games that keep the players to be alert, active and strategic.Playing these types of games makes the player experienced different feelings because it is as if the player is really the one taking the challenges.Despite those benefits, playing these games also bring negative effects. It requires much of the player's time, leaving school activities and home works unattended.

Cyberpornography

Kamis, 04 April 2013

You get up in the middle of the night to get a late snack. A small beam of light is shining in the living room corner. Then, in the part of the screen not blocked by your child's head, you see a woman exposing her breasts. What do you do? You can support a government regulation of the Internet, or talk to your kid(s) and tell them that it is wrong to look at explicit material. Cyberpornography is an issue in the world that is not talked about a lot. This topic does not get much attention as it should. There are tons of material on the World Wide Web that will give it to children under the age of 18 with just a click of the mouse. That I feel is wrong, and protection should be involved with it. Some type of agression should be placed on these sites. I really do not have a real good idea how to ban it, but taking it off the Internet would be a good idea. Cyberpornography is a disturbance to the people who think that the idea is wrong for women to be portrayed by showing their bodies to any free, open-eyed guy out in the world. The main reason is, that cyberpornography is teaching the young ones out there that looking at nude women is good, but really it is an issue that really is providing many bad things to little children.

To the children out there, this is leading them in a bad direction. I know there are several kids out there that like to look at nude women or men. But that is not what women and men are for. These kids should be looking up information for a research report, or cybering through the sports activities sites, not pornography sites. Older brothers and sisters, as well as some parents are setting the bad example in looking into these sites. Parents are supposed to be watching out for there children, and teaching them right from wrong in this world. Children should be brought up to respect women, many lead to sexual harassment cases and divorices from marriages later on in life.

There is not that many men as women nude on the Internet, but it still is close; there are more men than women that look at pornography on the Internet. Men and women even have sex shows on the Internet now. That really is providing bad scenes for children to have to look at. People having sex on the Internet really in my concern should be banned. Kids have no right to see these obscene gestures. They are just trying to either make money, or show themselves to others that sex is fun. They are providing entertainment to the cyberneters I guess; but nonetheless it is wrong, I think a law should ban it.

Pornography is described as any act or gesture with sexual implications. Cyberporn evokes passion in all audiences, the greater debate concerns the accessibility for children; the responsibility of parents, and the duties of the media. As a global communication medium, no one governing body can censor the Internet according to everyone's standards. The cyberporn debates affect everyone. Even though this issue may be discomforting, cyberpornography can also be engaging.

Maybe some part or computer chip could be provided for the blockage of pornography in the future. Parents should get this dirty scenery blocked out for their kids use. Then they would not have to worry about their kids learning of this gesture before they are even an adult. The First Amendment protects American's right to choose to access cyberporn locations. The Constitution guarantees Americans the right to access cyberporn and respond to it in the privacy of their home. Maybe some chip like the blockout piece for the TV; pornography could possibly be put into the computer in the near future. The future will only tell us. The movies have R or NC-17 ratings, maybe a symbol put on the Internet with a special password could possibly help.

Cyberporn represents a danger to the mind's of young children because of the scarring effects of the graphic material and the deviant's in cyberspace who try to hurt little kids. Pornographic images on the Internet contain elements which destroy not only a child's innocence, but also their view of the world. A world in which a child mobster has the ability to molest unimpeded. The minds of the children can wonder into many different styles and images. Their effects can also pertray the ways in which they will act for the rest of their lives.

To draw a conclusion, first I would say that this issue needs to be addressed more in our society today. I think women should not be portrayed in this in manner. Although, it is there choice whether or not to pose nude. The sexual images I feel are planted into each person's mind when they look at pornography over the Internet. They could lead the problems in the future with women also. Cyberporn is a crime. It not only endangers children's mental development, but also victimizes women. Since sexually explicit materials can be easily accessed on the Internet, I think it is time to call for cencorship. For children under the age of 18, this is really true. The government is the only agent I feel capable of stopping pornography on the Internet. The parents really can not stop it because the kids will usually look at the pictures behind their parents' backs. I think every person could find someone out in the world; and does not have to look for pornography on the Internet to think of men or women they find attractive because they are nude. There are many good things in life, getting married is one of them. Pornography is a bug that will keep going on forever. The only one that can stop looking at pornography is the person that sits in front of the computer screen. I would just like to say that a mind is not a terrible thing to waste. Use your mind wisely, pornography is the wrong way. Use the mind for smart things; things that will improve your well-being.

Facebook Is A Great Way To Connect

I feel facebook is a great source to connect and stay in touch with people. ,. “Facebook is a social utility that connects you with the people around you.” Facebook not only connects you with the people around you, but also connects you with long lost friends. It is used to reconnect with old friends and stay in touch with them, share photos with friends, and discuss shared interests and hobbies.

Facebook is one of the best connecting sites in my opinion. It allows you to search for friends or family, and once found you can add them. There is also lots of security on the site, so it’s a very safe socializing tool. Only the people who accept you, or you accept as friends can view your profile. There is also the option of blocking people or deleting them as friends. If you don’t want certain friends to see parts of your profile, there’s an option called “limited profile” which lets you choose the things you do or do not want them to see. If you are connected in a network you can see all the other people in your network too. By viewing your profile or your friends profile you can see how they’re doing. The profile contains personal information and recent activity. You can post videos or articles and read messages left on your wall.

Facebook allows you to upload unlimited photos. All photos are arranged into albums. Each of album can contain up to sixty photos. You can also set separate privacy options for each album. Facebook allows your friends to "tag" photos of you. Tagging a photo means that you identify the people in the picture. If the people are your Facebook friends, the tags will serve as links to their profiles. You can add captions to each of your photos too. Facebook lets users to comment on each other’s photos. When viewing any photo that a Facebook friend has uploaded, there is the option to add a comment underneath the picture. Your comment is then visible to anyone who views the photos

blog itself

Why should we use blog for teaching learning process ?

As we know in this modern era, technology is increasing day by day, especially in teaching learning process, we have to make it more advanced. Blog itself has many function, for the good example is we can post or create an article, current issue, our knowledge, etc. Then, people around the world or our student can search and read our posts in blog.

Blog provide many advantages to support our teaching learning process. It can help us to show and introduce our writing that we write in our blog. People around the world can see and access our writing easily. Not only for our students, but also students in every school around the world. we are able to educate to thousands of people our life, our learnings, and our thoughts about particular topics of interest in an easy and cost-effective manner. We can create discourse and get feedback on our material instantly which, in turn, helps the “curriculum” advance.

Although many blogs are personal and individual, some are developed collaboratively (Blogger allows you to create group blogs), with many people able to post to them. So a blog could be a co-creative space for a group of students and their teacher. The teacher can post to the blog as they would to a course website (resources, outlines, assignments...) and students can be tasked with responding to the teacher's resources and activities, keeping a reflective learning journal, and evaluating the work of their peers

Blogging is new territory for most academics, and research of the use of blogs in teaching is scarce. However, many of the elements required in maintaining a blog are the very things that we encourage students to do: keeping a reflective journal, critically assessing external sources, researching a topic, and so on.

In the 21st century, blog get the fame year by year. As of 16 February 2011, there were over 156 million public blogs in existence. On October 13, 2012, there were around 77 million Tumblr and 56.6 million WordPress blogs in existence worldwide. According to critics and other bloggers, Blogger is the most popular blogging service used today (wikipedia). In the Colleges Should Tap the Pedagogical Potential of the World-Wide Web." The Chronicle of Higher Education. 8 Aug. 1999. B8. Fraser, Alistair says "The extent to which a student gains the same pedagogical benefit from a printout of your Web resources as from the resources themselves is the extent to which you have done nothing of pedagogical value using the web."

Here are some of the main reasons why teachers and educaors should consider blogging as an educational medium (Med Kharbach:2012) :

  • Students enjoy blogging
  • Blogging enhances literacy skills
  • Using a blog makes learning independent of time  and place
  • It gets students engaged and boost their motivation
  • It promotes their communication skills
  • Just like other asynchronous media, blogs give time to students to reflect
  • It makes teaching students oriented
  • It emphasizes the " test and learn" and " learning by doing" strategies instead of " plan and execute " ones
  • It fosters the learning bonds between teachers and students
  • It gives a chance to shy students to participate with their peers and get their voice heard
  • It keeps parents updated about their kids progress
  • It enhances home-school links
  • It gives students a genuine and potentially worldwide audience for their work.
  • Blogging gives students ownership over their own learning and an authentic voice allowing them to articulate their needs and inform their learning.
  • It contributes to identity-formation in students
  • Blogging  helps teachers develop professionally
  • It fosters the development of writing and research skills as well as digital skills.
